How to Avoid the Naked Carb
Are you the kind of girl who can’t resist the bad boys? They’re heartbreakers, sure. You know you’ll regret it later, but they’re just too yummy to pass up. Or, do you prefer the hardworking, dependable guys? Ok, they take work. But, add some spice and heat them up, and they are a tasty dish. Men are a lot like food. You have to make smart choices, if you want to be healthy.
It’s true. Understanding men is simple compared to making healthy food choices. We can make 200 choices each day around food. But, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Just like your mother’s dating advice, traditional food combinations are based on experience and a good guide to follow. Remember, milk and cookies, cheese and crackers, beans and rice. Smart people figured out, if carbs are combined with some protein and fat, the casualties of a sugar crash can be avoided.
The body is all about not starving and stores energy to power it between meals. That’s right. Fat is stored energy. Without the ability to store energy, we would starve in our sleep. Recently, other smart people have shown that, while carbs encourage fat storage, protein promotes the release of that fat. It’s possible that protein stimulates fat burning because the body knows it can convert the protein into carbs, if it needs more energy.
Another thing about carbs. They are the most dangerous when they’re naked. If carbs are in fruit, vegetables, beans, whole grains (in their natural state), they don’t take advantage of you by stimulating long-term fat storage. So dress up those naked carbs with some protein and fat. Have some cheese with your wine. Put an extra olive or two in your vodka. Eat some peanuts with your beer. Making your carbs complex by adding protein and fat has the added advantage of reducing the amount of carbs you eat. Yes, serving size matters.
